The following are a few of the duties of a nursing assistant. CNAs will usually perform any tasks as required by the medical staff, patients, etc. These duties also vary depending on the type of organization that you work for.

1. CNAs interact with other medical staff, patients, the family of the patient, etc, on a daily basis. In some cases CNAs spend more time with the patient and patient’s family than nurses or other medical staff. This means that a CNA needs to have excellent communication skills and be able to provide emotional support when patients need it. Part of the CNA training curriculum focuses on improving communication skills to help you in this profession.

2. CNAs take care of the basic needs of patients which may include bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, etc. CNA training teaches how to properly accomplish these tasks while still allowing patients to maintain their privacy and dignity.

3. CNAs may also be needed to take the vital signs of the patients which may include blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, etc. Through the demonstrations on mannequins during CNA training as well as clinicals (practice in a real environment with real patients) which is also part of CNA training, you will learn how to perform this task.

4. CNAs may be in charge of escorting patients to dining rooms if the patients are mobile, to various rooms to have tests performed, etc.

5. CNAs may also in charge of changing the bedding. CNA training covers how to perform this task in addition to how to change bed linens for bedridden patients.

These are only a few of the duties required of CNAs. While the job may appear thankless at times, it is always good to know that you are helping someone who really needs your help each and every day which not what a lot of people can attest to with various other jobs.

CNAs in many cases are the eyes and ears of other medical staff as it relates to patients and being able to have a sharp eye for details will ensure that you excel in this profession and are appreciated by other medical staff, patients and patients’ families.

While CNA training will teach you how to perform your duties satisfactorily, mastering these skills will take dedication, practice, a desire to help others as well as good organizational skills so that you do not become overwhelmed.
